Optimising DVT Care Pathway in Mid-Essex CCG
Background
Mid-Essex CCG engaged Oberoi Consulting to implement a new primary care-based deep vein thrombosis (DVT) care pathway. To begin with, we conducted an audit to evaluate the costs associated with the existing pathway, which required referring patients with suspected DVT to the local A&E department. We identified opportunities to improve the patient experience and reduce the burden on the NHS.
Subsequently, we proposed a revised care pathway for suspected DVT with tests being conducted in surgeries using D-Dimer rapid testing kits supplied by Oberoi Consulting. This allowed for informed decision-making and immediate action, resulting in quicker and more efficient diagnosis and a significant reduction in unnecessary referrals to secondary care. The revised pathway has improved patient experience and reduced financial burden on the NHS.
Outcome
By using D-Dimer kits supplied by Oberoi Consulting, Mid-Essex CCG was able to implement a revised primary care pathway for suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT). As a result, the number of referrals made to secondary care was reduced, resulting in a significant reduction in the financial burden on the NHS. The revised care pathway has also improved the diagnosis procedure, resulting in quicker and more efficient diagnosis, and reduced unnecessary referrals. These outcomes have benefited both patients and clinicians.
